“Not a phone-case, but a Gocase” - how a Brazilian startup is revolutionizing the mobile world

Gocase is a young Brazilian brand producing one of a kind mobile accessories. Colorful, vibrant, a Gocase is meant to be looked at and stand out from the crowd. This desire for uniqueness is a core value of the company from Fortaleza. “We are not trying to sell a tech gadget, but a fashion accessory” says Leonardo Caracas, managing director of Gocase. The company is determined to permanently change the way we understand a phone-case, turning it into an expression of personal style and creativity. We sat down with Leonardo to discuss the story and achievements of Gocase, as well as the creative process behind each product, and how to juggle a startup between Brazil and the Netherlands. 


Started in Brazil in 2015, Gocase is now the largest mobile accessories web-shop in the country, boasting a whopping 1.4 million likes on Facebook. Just like many other young companies, Gocase found its winning business strategy through trial and error. The Gocase his team knew they wanted to create something special, turning an ordinary product into something unique and fun. “Everyone has a smartphone these days, but the cases out there were really plain and not appealing to the kind of people who like to express their unique style”. But how to get things started? After a b2b experience, attending a festival in Brazil made the team realize the potential of directly catering to customers. “We presented an exclusive capsule collection designed to be sold at a festival. We tried to appeal to the crowd, and people really liked it.”

Two years have passed since that lucky day, and Gocase hasn’t stopped growing. Their Fortaleza office is now home to a team of 50 people, and in June 2016 the company set foot in Europe with an Amsterdam office. Being based in two continents is not easy, but it is a challenge Leonardo relishes. “With a time difference of 5 hours, communication can be extremely difficult. There’s a language barrier to take into account as our Brazilian team engages with the very international team in Amsterdam. And sometimes Internet connections just don’t work (laughs)”. Practical issues aside, Leonardo is proud of the wide range of attitudes and backgrounds making up Gocase’s team and its global vision of success. Leonardo speaks of Gocase’s development as a collective effort, where the brilliant insights, passion and dedication of each team member are the driving force paving the way to success. “We want people to lead the company, and create a business with us, enjoying freedom as well as a great deal of responsibility. Everyone has the possibility to impact the development of Gocase.” 

Gocase offers something for everybody. We dare anyone to take a quick glance at their webshop and not fall in love with at least one of their colorful designs! Supporting global talent, Gocase collaborates with a wide range of artists from all over the world to create unique, beautiful products. “We really want to expand our portfolio, so that no matter who you are, and what your interests or style might be, you can spend some time on our website and find something that matches you and your style“. 

Each design closely reflects what is hot and worth talking about for millennials everywhere. From the cases specifically inspired by Netflix’s recent hit show 13 Reasons Why, to the Internet’s obsession for everything unicorn related, the Gocase team knows what is hip and cool, and how to package it in beautiful cases. “We try to always have our eye on social media to understand the topics people are engaging in, and build cool products out of them. And then we pass those ideas to our designer team to add our flavor to it. We have a very defined view of how we would like the designs to be to reflect our vibe”.

So what is the Gocase vibe? For Leonardo, it has everything to do with the company’s home-country: Brazil. It’s a positive, vibrant, colorful attitude, aiming at making life a little more fun and beautiful - one case at a time. “We represent the Brazilian vibe. It’s all about warmth, happiness, good vibrations. A phone case is something you carry around all day - we want something that sends a positive message, something that can change your day even if you look at it for just five seconds. We want to make you smile!”

But there is more to be done, and Leonardo does not shy away from setting up ambitious new goals for the future. “I want people to say they have a Gocase, not a case. We have a world map in the office we want to cover in pins to see that there is a Gocase in every corner of this world!”. Gocase aims at turning phone accessories into statement pieces, an opportunity for people to define who they are and express their style. 

We concluded by asking Leonardo for a word of advice for someone starting a business. What is the key to success? For Leonardo, there is no magic in growing a business. It is a question of absolute dedication. Great designs, a strong social media presence, strong customer support - and most importantly the willingness to get up in the morning and get it done. “If you’re willing to do it, and go the extra mile every time to achieve something better than what came before - then you have the strongest ingredient to success of them all.”
